5 Days – Ice & Northern Lights Winter 2015

Skrevet af Thomas Sindberg kl i

Just north of the arctic circle in Greenland lies the old American military base “Søndre Strømfjord”. Today the base is owned by the Greenlandish people and is called Kangerlussuaq, which also is the name of the network of fjords that starts a few km off base.

The area offers wild arctic nature in close proximity to the Ice Cap. The wildlife here is some of the best and most varied in Greenland with around 20.000 Musk Ox, plenty of reindeer, polar foxes and snowhare. The winter in Greenland is famous for its fresh crystal clear blue skies, and you wouldn’t believe it; lots of sun! Perfect for winter activities such as dogsledging and snowscooters.

Kangerlussuaq has arctic inland climate and is one of the best spots in Greenland to experience northern Lights. In fact the biggest weather station in Greenland is positioned here, to better study the nothern lights.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Copenhagen-Kangerlussuaq – trip to the Ice Cap
Departure from Copenhagen at 09:10am, arrival in Kangerlussuaq at 09:50am local.

In Kangerlussuaq you will be living at the Old Camp Hostel, which is about 1.5 km from the airport. There will be transfer from the airport waiting for you. Upon arrival at Old Camp, we will hold a short briefing about the activities in Kangerlussuaq.

Today we imbark on a journey to the famous Ice Cap, which has its beginnings about 40km from Kangerlussuaq. The trip goes through very beautiful Greenlandic landscapes, which have been formed by the movement of the ice sheet throughout thousands of years. The mountains are rounded, and it’s easy to see the effects and strong forces of the ice. If weather permits we will be able to walk up onto the ice cap itself. At its highest point, the Greenlandic Ice Cap is more than 3km thick!

On the way there will be plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife; musk ox, raindeer, snowhare and the elusive snow fox.

In the evening we will go to Restaurant Roklubben, which is located at the border of the very scenic Lake Ferguson, a short drive from Kangerlussuaq. Transfer to the restaurant is included. If the weather is clear, this is a great spot to experience the Northern Lights.

Day 2: Kangerlussuaq – free day
Breakfast at Old Camp. Today you can choose ekstra trips or excursions here in Kangerlussuaq. Dog sledge trips, tundra safari, Ice Fishing or mayby our favourite tour; hiking in the tundra with lunch over open fire! Check the options further down.

Day 3: Kangerlussuaq-Ilulissat / citytour
Breakfast at Old Camp. Around noon we leave Kangerlussuaq to our new destination, Ilulissat (the name Ilulissat means means ‘icebergs’ in greenlandic – and for a reason!). Even before we land in Ilulissat, you will be able to see the dramatic landscape beneath, with gigantic icebergs far out into the horison. We pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel Hvide Falk, that lies with breathtaking views over Disko Bay.

Today we will take you on a historic city tour through Ilulissat. We walk past the old colonial harbour, and to “brættet” where the local fishermen sell their daily catch, and not least, we will visit the old house of famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen.

Day 4: Ilulissat- Sermermiut hike & Icefjord Cruise
Breakfast at Hotel Hvide Falk.

After breakfast we will hike up and into the Sermemiut Valley, which probably will be one of the most beautifull hikes you will ever experience. It is not hard, it is not long, but the views over Kangia Icefjord is a sight to behold! The place is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, and it is here where you can experience with your own ice, the “emptying” of ice into the ocean from the Ice Cap. 10% of all ice coming from the Ice Cap, goes through this narrow straight. On our way to the fjord, we will come across very old Inuit settlements.

We have lunch in town on our own.

In the afternoon, it is time to take to the seas, and we will depart for the Ice Fjord cruise. At slow speeds we will cruise through the waters littered with icebergs of all shapes and sizes. It gets cold at sea, so take extra warm cloth. Use the layer system, so you can alway put on or take off another layer of cloth.

Day 5: Ilulissat – own program
Breakfast at Hotel Hvide Falk.

You’ll have the day to your own disposition: We highly recommend a dog sledge tour, which will be one of the highlights of your trip. Choose among the following:

  • Dog sledge tour – 2 hours: Price per person: DKK 1.300,-
  • Dog sledge tour – 5 hours: Price per person: DKK 1.645,- incl. hot drinks
  • Dog sledge tour – 2 days: Price per person: DKK 4.095,- incl. food, accomodation & sleeping gear

You will be picked up by a small bus at the hotel and driven to the dogsledges stands, from where the tour departs. The dogs are very eager to get going, and can’t wait; this is what they love the most. We will leave town and go whereever weather permits.

Depending on the weather situation, it get’s cold while being out on the sledge, so remember to bring warm clothes. You can rent traditional sealskin garments, which are very warm and made for this climate. (Rental for a sealskin set is 35euro).

Day 6: Ilulissat – free day
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are on your own in Ilulissat. We recommend a visit to the local museum or the art museum. You will also have plenty of time to hike around town and enjoy the views of the Ice Fjord. Or maybe do a sightseeing tour in helicopter en small plane.

Day 7: Ilulissat – Kangerlussuaq – Copenhagen
